I’m very glad to say that coming to our website today is someone who I really cherish and appreciate, and that is Nancy Truong (I call her Ms. Nancy), who is my school’s ex-librarian and also my beloved teacher! Throughout her not-so-long yet very memorable time at my school DGS, she has inspired a lot of students with reading books, one of which is me! That is why I strongly believe that she can be someone that hopefully can encourage you to pick up a book today, because whatever genre it is, books can definitely bring you places and let you gain experiences you have never had before. Happy reading!

Hi everyone! My name is Nancy Truong, and I'm a librarian who's passionate about reading. My reading journey began when I moved to Canada from Germany at age seven. Although I struggled with English initially, the support from my ESL teachers and local library was phenomenal. Regular library visits, encouraged by my dad, played a vital role in my progress. We discovered books with audio tapes that greatly enhanced my learning. Overcoming language barriers and joining my school's special reading program in Grade 5 was a huge accomplishment. This experience shaped my love for books and gratitude towards those who helped me. To this day, I cherish the comfort libraries provide and the magic of reading.
Reading might seem old-school, but it's anything but boring. Books are like secret portals that transport you to different worlds, introduce you to unforgettable characters, and give you fresh perspectives on life. Plus, with countless genres and topics out there, there's something for everyone! So, how do you embark on this literary adventure? Here are some tips for picking a great book and making reading a fun, fulfilling part of your life:
1. Identify Your Interests: Think about your passions, hobbies, and favorite movies or TV shows. Whether you’re into learning through imagination (fiction), or learning through information (non-fiction), chances are there’s a book out there that’ll captivate you. Start by exploring genres and topics that match your interests, and don't be afraid to try something new!
2. Get Recommendations: Ask friends, family, teachers, or librarians for book suggestions based on your interests. Online resources like Goodreads, BookTok, or book review blogs are also great for discovering hidden gems and popular titles. You can even join online book communities to connect with fellow book lovers and swap recommendations.
3. Try Before You Commit: Read a few pages, a chapter, or the book summary to see if it grabs your attention. Reading shouldn’t feel like a chore, so give yourself permission to move on if a book doesn't resonate with you.
4. Set Goals and Track Progress: Challenge yourself with a reading goal, like finishing a book per month or reading 20 pages daily. Keeping track of your progress can be super motivating and satisfying – you could even use apps like Goodreads to log your reading achievements and share them with friends.
5. Make It a Habit: Incorporate reading into your daily routine to make it a habit. Find a cozy spot, maybe with a warm beverage and some snacks, and dedicate a specific time to diving into your book. You’ll be surprised at how much reading even a little bit each day adds up!
6. Share Your Reading Journey: Discussing books with others can be incredibly rewarding and enjoyable. Start a mini book club with friends, join online forums, or share book reviews on social media – you might inspire others to pick up a book too!
I also think it's essential to remember that there's no age limit on the books you can enjoy. Don't feel pressured to stick to books you think are age-appropriate or follow a structured reading path. Your reading journey is unique, and there's nothing wrong with exploring different types of books, such as picture books, young fiction novels, or graphic novels.
What matters most is that you find joy and fulfillment in the books you choose. So, go ahead and read what makes you happy – there's no right or wrong way to be a book lover! Embrace your personal preferences and let your love for reading guide you on your literary adventure. Remember, the most important part of your reading journey is that you enjoy it. Happy reading!
